Our name is inspired by the Kushite king Taharqa, ruler of the Kingdom of Napata and the fifth Pharaoh of Egypt’s Twenty-fifth Dynasty. Remembered as one of the dynasty’s most notable rulers alongside Piye, he is mentioned in the Bible as the protector of Jerusalem from the Assyrians. His reign, from 690 BC to 664 BC, left a legacy of monuments and achievements that solidified his place in history. |
| Taharqa also led successful campaigns against the Persians, prompting the King of Persia to remark, “I have never seen people as tough as them.” While his reign involved conflicts with the Assyrians, it also included periods of peace and prosperity. He commanded Egyptian forces in a historic battle against the Assyrian emperor Sennacherib to defend Jerusalem, responding to appeals from the Hebrew community. His leadership successfully stopped the Assyrian advance, ultimately forcing Sennacherib to retreat to Babylon after abandoning the siege. | |
